A Couple
A man and a woman
tempt each other toward their mutual
desires with hardy meals and conversation,
teaching what the city teaches each eye
and hand. Nothing spoils
like shared joy. The waiter brings
bread and wine, offers a joke, begs
like a dog for bread
of his own.
No one is from around here.
The woman treats her partner to dessert
with a hand dipped in mystery—dressed
in soft skin, freckles, and feathery
movements. Warmth works its way
around the restaurant, spreading
through the booths.
No one knows how this is done.
The man tells the woman the miracle
they inhabit will not stop working until the last
raindrop falls, until all rumors are fed
from the same source and the streets
no longer roar. He tells her
it can work this way. He tells her
he means it.
